Help with feeding my Northern Ringneck

howiet4702 Oct 06, 2004 11:14 AM

I found a 10-12 inch ringneck snake about 2 weeks ago and I don't really think it is eating. The items I tried to feed him were crickets, mealworms, small earthworms, and rosy red minnows. These are some of the things local pet stores have suggested. Any other ideas? I know they love red backed salamanders but there is no way i find any around my house. I assume I can't buy these right? Any info, i mean ANY info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Howard

I live In FL and the ones down here eat small anoles and frogs.
They will also eat small snakes and worms.

Salamanders are the key to success with most WC northerns. If you can't get salamanders, I suggest letting it go.

I agree with HerperHelmz, but the last thing you may try is to feed the ringneck with earth worm. Some northern ringneck feeds exclusively on redback salamander but some take earth worm as well. If your ringneck shows no interest in earth worm, you should consider let go the ringneck before the Winter sets in.

With all of the specimens I have had, I offer worms first, live ones, F/T ones, F/T left in over night, live ones left in if they can't burrow away. If those don't work, I offer small snakes, cause feeder snakes are easy to obtain. If that doesn't work either, I try F/T salamanders, slimy salamanders and red backed salamanders. If none of those work, a live one usually brings back their appetitite.
