Eucalyptus?

D41LYBR34D Oct 06, 2004 01:57 PM

I know redwoods and pine barks have harmful phenol thingies in them, but what about eucalyptus wood? I know the leaves are pretty poisonous, but what about the wood? I have some slabs of bark that I got for free with some other wood, and I was just wondering if I could use them in a snake viv, at least maybe for australian snakes like carpet pythons? If anyone could tell me anything that would be great. Thanks.

I wouldn't suggest it. I'm not sure what you're calling Eucalypus bark. What I know of Eucs is that the bark peels of in paper like strips, often found littering the ground of Euc groves. You may have slabs of outer rind. It's gnarly wood and a pain to work but really can be beautiful for woodworking. But would be dangerous in a viv. While it may be true that Aussie snakes might be found in Euc groves it most likely it is for short term and the natural removal of ectoparasites. In your viv they would not be able to get away from the toxic odors which could prove fatal.

Hope this helps.
