successful first feedings for couperi and comment on sex ratios

Carmichael Jun 27, 2003 06:46 PM

My 8 little gems are doing quite well and just wanted to share some observations. First, I have two males and six females in this clutch that just hatched. Last year, I had 2 males and four females and the year before that, one male and five females. Has other folks shown similar ratios?

I am now in that wonderful period of getting my hatchling couperi to feed. So far, all refused their first feedings of frozen/thawed fuzzies as expected. But, on the next go around, here's what was taken:

6 indigos took 1-day old frozen/thawed quail (I am starting to think that this is the miracle food for baby indigos)
2 indigos took small shad allowed to flop around the cage floor; the next day, I offered 1 day old quail scented with shad and they took them. Everyone ate!

On the next feeding I will be attempting to smear quail/shad on to frozen/thawed fuzzies (as I did last year) and hopefully it won't be too much longer before they are devouring frozen/thawed rodents. I have been much luckier than in years past in getting all of the hatchlings to feed.

Now the even harder part, trying to not get too tattached to every hatchling!

Most of the time, my ratios have been pretty similar. Hopefully in the next week or two, I can give an update on my clutch's ratios.

Congrats on getting the little ones to eat so soon.
