Thawing Frozen Rats

CJBianco Oct 06, 2004 05:24 PM

I'll be receiving my first shipment of frozen weaned rats tomorrow and am eagerly anticipating the whole switch-from-live-to-frozen adventure. Anyway...I was thinking...can I thaw the frozen rats in my Jason's Jungle Rack? I don't use the bottom shelf Sterilites, and they do maintain a steady 92 degrees at the back wall. Has anyone tried this? Any complications with rat fumes...? Anything?

Thanks In Advance,
Chris

I put the frozen mice/rats in a zip lock bag and let them sit out all day at room temp while I’m at work, when I get home they are ready to go, sometimes I set the bag in hot water to give a little extra heat before I serve using tongs, good luck hope this helps.

Toss a rat into some Hot water (as hot as it will come out of the sink). No bag needed make sure it's a clean bucket though! this is the quickest way!

Agreed. After a while you ditch the plastic bag. Snakes don't care if the rats hair is damp. Soak the rat right in hot water right out of the tap, it thaws faster. Change the water a few times if needed to keep it hot (bigger rat, more hot water changes). Pat the rat semi-dry (at least so it's not dripping wet) when FULLY thawed, and serve on tongs or hemostats very warm.
