Veiled Chameleon... I really need help on this one...Part 2

severa Oct 06, 2004 07:53 PM

Well, here are some pics. He still practices his fetal behaviour even in the pillowcase. But not all the time while on the pillow case. He spent 4 hours in the sun today. He is very aggressive once he is in the sun, opening his mouth if I go near the cage ( I have him in a wire bird cage that is half shaded and with low dowel rods). Last night, we ate 4 crickets coated with rep-cal.He is still not using his tongue but still calmly opening his mouth without aggression. I am still baffled on this behaviour. He still has not deficated and tonight is a week and a day of eating and not passing it through. I am a little nervous about it but he has no hard lumps on his underside.
I want to order miner-all and was wondering about which to order. It will be getting colder here in Ga soon and I don't know how much longer I will be letting him outside. Having said that, should i get the miner-all with or without D3? His rep-cal is already fortified with D3.
Also, do any of you use the Zoo Med powersun MV UVB bulb? Having a hard time making a decision on getting one. Read alot of testimonies and most seem good. Still open to opinions. I was going to replace the bulb (flourescent repti-sun) this friday given to me from previous owner.Just want to make sure I get a good bulb. I am treating him as if he does have MBD, so I need a bulb that gives a strong amout of UVB.
Thanks again for all of your help. Its good to be among herpers of such enthusiasm and knowledge.
Thanks again!
Severa

Hi Severa,

He does look tiny for a male - or it could be the angle of camera. Poor little guy But I am glad he found you!

I do use the PowerSun. It blew out after just a couple months but I had no problem getting it replaced. What I like about it is that it gives off heat, too. I live in NH so it gets rather chilly I also use a 60w plain bulb for basking. I do have a repti-sun 5.0 for back up.

He may have injured his tongue or he may just need to get his strength back via nutrition and supplements. Were you able to find a vet?

A couple of my friends use power sun and had them blow out after a month and one after a month and a half. They will replace them, but it would be a good idea to have a second one in case. That way you don't have to have him go without UV until the new one arrives.

I have a powersun too. I've only been using it for a few weeks, so don't know about it blowing out. You have to be very careful with them. The must be set up so that they point straight down, not on an angle. The glass might break if you get if wet while it's on (obviously) and apparently the grease from your hands can also cause it to break when it's hot. I don't touch mine but use a paper towel.

That being said, they last twice as long as a flourescent (a year), penetrate much further, and give off heat. They also will shut themselves off if they get too hot, and then turn themselves back on once they are cool. If you unplug it by accident, it will wait until it's cool again before coming back on (assuming you plug it back in,haha).

I use a 60 watt for heat also.

I have a friend looking up a vet not far from where I live. I will know something tomorrow. Thank you for the list of vets though, i really appreciate it. I may end up using the one in marietta if this other vet hasn't had much experiencr with chameleons.
I don't know that the tongue is injured. I have seen it and it doesn't look bad. What I think is, is that he is in such a state that from being so weak (when i got him, he could barely stand long without rolling over)that feeding successfully was not an option. But then again, you may be right, his tongue may be damaged. Perhaps lack of nutrition had made it weak...i really dunno , but time will tell.

I think I am going to get the powersun, many of you use them and with the exception that they are seemingly delicate, I am willing to give it a try due to the favortism towards them.
Thanks for all the feedback, i really appreciate it!!!!
