Clueless About Turtles

wsurugby10 Oct 06, 2004 10:15 PM

I'm looking to get an aquatic turtle of some kind(not sure what yet) and I was wondering what I needed to house it. Is a 20 gallon long big enough. I know I'm going to need some kind of filter but I'm sure exactly what. If someone out there could tell me what exactly I need to house a turtle that would be great. Thanks for your time.

those common turtles the red ear slider at least needs a LARGE tank, like for a male, I'd go 55gallon with a cansiter filter...the turtle is cheap, the housing is not.

20 gal may work for about a year with a atchling, but im afraid almost any turte needs at least 55 gal. There are submersible filters available at most pet stores, and you should get the one rated for the most water that you can afford. water quality is really important and your filter cannot be too big. id recomend checking out Austinsturtlepage.com they have tons of care sheets and a forum like this one devoted solely to tortoises and turtles. Another option aside from an aquarium is a large rubbermade tub, cheap and quite affective, but not as pretty as an aquarium.
