Why does my Iguana hate my cat?

truefate Oct 07, 2004 09:30 AM

I have had this Iguana for almost 2 years. He was given to me by someone who couldn't handle him any more. He was a bit agressive at frist but he is now quite nice and I have had few compliants until now. I keep him in the living room of my one bedroom apt. and I have 2 cats. recently he has taken up bashing his face into the glass of his cage trying to get to one of my cats. Its to the point where he has developed a sore on his snout form all the bashing. He only seems to go after the female (smaller cat) and leaves the larger male alone. The only way I have found to curve this is to tape paper to the outside of his cage to limit his sight of the cat. I am more worried about keeping his nose safe then the cat. If I didnt put up the paper his nose would never heal. why does he do this???

Bashing like that is a thing some iguanas do. I've never figured out why, because all the cases are so dissimilar. Sometimes you have to put a strip of textile padding on the inside to prevent damage to the nose, because if the injury splits the skin down to the bone, he'll have a facial abscess to deal with.

The only thing I can think of is breeding season, but that doesn't offer any way to stop the bashing.

well since i have put up paper to block his view he has resorted to stretching top look over the paper and bobbing his big green head. it is quite a sight, kinda like "hey over here look at me, I am still here"
