Pet store Probs

Hey guys was wondering if you all could give me some advice.

while i don't actually own an iguana as yet i plan on adopting one around christmas and have been doing lots of research into them(this forum has been especially helpful).

the pet store closest to me has several bay iguanas in what appears to be about a 20 gallon tank. The fluorescent light is old fluctuating and has a dirty piece of plastic between the light and the igs.. the overall condition of the tanks themselves are dirty like they haven't been cleaned in months(spider webs and dirt and such).

also, this is my biggest problem especially for young igs, is the food is just garbage, while they're feeding some good foods (i'm in the store almost every day checking things out for my beardie) most of it is stuff like corn and lettuce (which i know is bad) also, not only is it bad they leave the food in for days at a time until there's a nice layer of hairy mold on top of it before they change it.

I feel really bad for the animals ( all the other reptiles are in a similar state) but am not really sure what i can do for them. I can't afford to buy them all and take care of them myself obviously but how do you think i should approach the mgmt and the situation? or possibly other alternatives you can suggest?
I know this is a long post but i hope it all makes sense and reallly would like some advice.

Thanks for your time

Derek

There is that same problem that i was talking to one of my friends about today. We decided that we are calling the humane society tomorrow. Also from what we heard there is some kind of company that deals with pet stores and animal treatment in them. Look into that and I would recommend calling your local humane society or some kind of animal control. Good luck, I know how you feel.

That's a good thought.

I also decided i'm going to go in an talk to the manager on tuesday after the holiday (thanksgiving up here in Canada) when I get back to College.

you never know it may be them just having the wrong information so if i go in and explain the problems to them it may get fixed.

Food left until it molds and filthy cages do not indicated lack of knowledge. It's a sign of irresponsibility and apathy. The thing to do is call local Animal Control or the local Humane Society when you know the conditions are bad and insist that they pay a visit. If they also keep small animals such as rabbits you can call the Department of Agriculture. Worst case scenario and none of these exist, call the police department and report a cruelty case. This definately would be considered cruelty and neglect. Don't do them a favor and give them any warning by talking to them.
