The Whitesided Hatchlings seem to love water snakes.

Get ready for the PETS responses! (People For The Ethical Treatment of Snakes)
I only feed snakes to another snake because it won't eat anything else (ie. Texas Coral). Even though it doesn't really bother me personally, you probably shouldn't make a habit of it when you can get mice for 50 cents. Or at least post pictures on a site for snake lovers. Some folks get all bent out of shape, (although I don't) I still respect their views...Like I said, get ready for those!

Some of the floridana neonates only take snakes as their first meal. I am sure this is why Jeff has been feeding them.

BTW, Jeff I need some water snakes for some of my brooksi. They are starving!

I have been trying to get someone to sell me some water snakes to keep and here you are feeding them to another snake!

Keith Hillson Oct 07, 2004 09:10 PM

WOW dude whats wrong with you ? Just because that snake wants only other snakes for a meal you do that !!?!? I think you should just let it starve instead of using other snakes as food ! I mean thats more humane right ? lol, kidding of course I have my Waters (thanks Jeff) ready for the bellies of non feeding snakes. Sometimes its the only way and I use it as a last resort. The fact is Kings eat them in the wild. Contrary to the beliefs of some they dont stumble upon pinkies very often in the wild especially frozen thawed ones.

Believe me I wish they would all take pinkies from the start. A lot of the Whitesides I have left are reserved and I can't get rid of them until they take pinkies. It can be a pain. But it sure is cool to see them eat these water snakes. Sorry!

Oh, gee, thanks. Like they are just hanging around waiting to be brought inside. ;p

that's an absurdly over-sized meal for a king that size, that should be obvious to you or anyone here. would you feed it a grown rat if it would eat it?

on a more practical matter, do you ever just cut off the water snake 3-4 inches down the body, once the king has started eating it, so that the feeding is an appropriate sized meal once you get past your dining drama? Or do you freeze the water snakes so you're not introducing parasites to your kings?

I usually do cut the water snake in half after they grab it but not on the smaller water snakes. The one in the picture I did cut. King snakes are made to eat a good size snake, and I usually give them a big peace. This is a very safe practice and they digest it very fast. Also the water snakes are from females I have in captivity for a while and where dewormed. The baby water snakes have never eaten a meal so they are parasite free. I have been doing this for a few years and never had a problem.

I wish I had a pregnant watersnake knock on my door and ask to come in and give birth on my living room floor.

No, a friend of mine, Rob Steves (Bayou Reptiles), produced these. Cal. Kings are not my passion, but I just thought these were really cool.

Chocolate and Cream colored Cal King
I got this one from Don Shores.

bluerosy Oct 07, 2004 06:18 PM

Is that a het for chocloate? or is that a het for bannana chocolate?

I have Dons Shores chocolate banannas and was just wondering what that was.

jjl Oct 07, 2004 10:22 PM

I'm not sure what snakes Don calls chocolates. I got this from him labled as just a high white. He wasn't sure why some of them had this chocolate colored background. It's hard to tell from the picture, but the background is really chocolate colored and not black. The eyes on it also have a redish tent to them.
