some Q's from a new B&W owner

musashai Oct 07, 2004 08:56 PM

Just got my new Argentine B&W from agama international (buy from him, he's great, so is his wife) I'll tell you what, within minutes I could tell there was a HUGE difference between the arg and my gf's columbian.

1)Sexing--how to do it or should I have some one probe it for me or is there pre-anal pores that I can see? (Like on crested gecko's, I breed those (^.^))

2)When can I start feeding fuzzy's? It is about 15-17 inches total length, about 6-8 svl.

3)I cant think of a god darn name!!! >< Know any sites or books with a lot of good names or something?

4)I have a 5 foot long by 3 foot wide and 2 foot high cage which I plan on keeping it in when its full grown. I stuck it in there today but is that too big for it? I have a 20 long that I can put it in for now if thats too big.

first of all the main diference between the arg and the columbian is that u will still be able to hold yours when it's big. second do not get it probed it can harm it and what ever the vet or who ever will say it's not exactly right this is a tegu not a snake. you will be able to tell in time ( large jowls and size from 4-5ft ). third mine baby is only about 12" and eats fuzzies so i'm sure yours will eat them. and finally i would go with the biger cage ( eventualy it will even outgrow the big cage, so why spend time gettin smaller cages when u have a big cage. i hope this helps.

its not that i would be going to buy another one, the 20 long is just sitting on top of the big cage is all.

The columbian has pre-anal pores thats why i asked about the argentine...looks like little pepper marks near his vent, thats how I could tell it was a boy before the vet could. I was just wondering if they developed these or hemophorical (sp?) bumps like cresties do. I just dont want to wait till its full grown before I give it a name.

The males do have hemipenal bulges, mine sure does. AND a thick neck. I named my male when I thought he was a female, Tika.

When do they start to show the bulges? Is it size or age that determines when they will mature?

Mine started to show around a year or so, not sure if it applies to all tegus. I thought he was a female for the longest time but that was because I didnt know how to properly sex them.

I have also recently purchased a young Argentine B&W Tegu from Bert. He sexed mine for me. I told him I wanted a male. I went out and picked it up from his place. Luckily, the first one we caught was a BEAUTIFUL little boy. I named him Phantom. What have you had luck feeding yours? Mine will eat pinkies and superworms...but he wouldn't touch a banana. After a pinkie and some superworms he seems full.
