what range should I shoot for? Or rather, I just want to know how high not to go - what to avoid.

If you live in an area with higher than moderate humidity, then make sure the cage has lots of ventilation and maybe use a light to help lower the in-cage humidity a little. I'm not good at relating humidity to relative %'s, but I think 60% is the start of moderate.

I keep rosies, and where I live the humidity gets up to 70% at times but not all year round. They do fine here.

San Felipe is in the Sonoran desert, but right on the coast of the Sea of Cortez in Baja. The humidity there is low-to-moderate during the course of a year. The point here is that it is desert (even if close to the ocean), so if your snakeroom feels like a jungle, then it is too humid.
