Amphiuma problems

I have a friend that has an amphiuma that is floating and cannot sink. Does anyone have experience with these things? I'm familar with problems in floating turtles, but I've only ever seen 2 amphiumas, let alone know about health problems for them.

Anybody got any ideas?
