Stil having feeding problems

AlteredMind99 Oct 07, 2004 10:00 PM

Ok, so im still having problems getting my hoggie to eat. I have tried scenting with tuna a few times and it hasn't worked I was wondering if anyone has had any luck scenting with frogs? I could get a green tree frog pretty easily, but i dont want to scent with anything that could be bad for my hog.

In the past I have had success with scenting with lizards and some of the other scenting methods. I find it always better to wash the pinkie with dish soap and rinse well. But recently I was given two 04 hatchling that would not feed. I have been pretty successful using the above methods until now. So I tried the tuna method that had worked for a friend of mine, but they would not eat. I was walking from my shed and noticed a little toad/frog that was bronze in color and very fast. I managed to catch it and since these little guys were starting to look bad (they have not eaten for about 2 or 3 months) I put the frog in with one of them, instantly the little guy started to show interest. I came back about 10 min later and he had eaten the frog. I went on a search for more frogs it took me 2 hours to find some more and fed the other one. These frogs are really hard to find, for me at least. So I was reading the post about goldfish and decided to try it. Since these hogs are so tiny I purchase Rosy reds (Feeder Fish) and tried them. I was really surprised they showed as much interest in the fish as they did with frogs. They each have eaten the Rosy Reds, but you do have to watch that they eat the rosy red or goldfish head first. If they eat tail first the dorsal fin may get caught going down. I have shared this with a friend of mine that had trouble with a hog not feeding and it worked for him as well. I plan on scenting with the fish the next time i feed.

Good Luck

Tony

Do you think green tree frogs would work?

What kind of lizards are good for scenting?

Thanks so much!

I found that tuna works better, the longer you soak the pinkie in it. I take a pink and defrost in approx a 1/4 cup of water with approx t table spoons of tuna. I let it sit for a few hours. Just rubbing tuna on a pink has proven hit or mis but soaking has worked great. If this fails and you must get frogs, let me know, I live in S.Florida and get them year round. Good Luck

I have a stubborn eater and tried scenting and minnows but have recently had luck buying "frog legs" and tease feeding with a piece of meat of appropriate size. They come frozen and are easier to keep than live toads. I think "frog legs" are even cheaper than buying toads or live frogs. Good luck
