Yes, ingesting soil can be a problem. Ingesting soil substrate can lead to impaction which can be fatal.
A common suggestion is to replace the soil substrate with paper towels. It doesn't look as pretty but it's much easier to take care of, and there's no risk of impaction.
The other thing you can do is bowl feeding - clip the cricket's back legs so they can't jump, and put them in a bowl inside the cage. Make sure that the bowl is under/near some perches/branches to the gecko can see that there are crickets in there. It's kind of tedious to do the leg clipping, but there's no risk of impaction and you get to see exactly how many crickets get eaten.
