Raising Leopards in a tropical environment

drey Oct 08, 2004 02:00 AM

Hi, im new to lizards, and i was thinking of purchasing a juvenile tangerine pair from a friend. I've been reading through the care sheets, and have a few questions. A background on the environment i live in first.

Room temp is around 79-82F, and humidity is really high, at least 60% and above. Based on that, would i still need :

1: A UTH. im worried that the lowest wattage of a UTH would still make the temperatures too high, given the already fairly high room temp. would it be alright to not give a heater, and instead try and make a natural heat gradient by providing cool rocks at one end of the tank?
2: a moist humid hide. Would there be too much humidity? = scale rot ??

other question i would have is how often and many prey items would i feed a juvenile?

Advice appreciated,
drey

I was just wondering where you live? A leo can eat crickets, mealworms and roaches. I personally only feed our leos mealworms and superworms. They are all fat and healthy. You need to make sure you gutload you crickets, mealworms or whatever you decide to feed them. They do need a humid hide for shedding reasons. As far as the heat goes I'll let someone else answer that for you, because I'm not sure of that. Also you will need to make sure your leos have a calcium dish in their cage along with their food and water. Hope this helps you. If you have anymore questions feel free to ask.

Yes, you should still use a heater. Just have it plugged into a thermostat or rheostat to control the temps. Regardless of room temps, you would still need the thermostat to prevent the UTH from overheating.

If you live in a humid area you might not need a humid hide. I've heard from people in Florida that just misting the hides when the leos are starting to shed usually works.
