Is it a regular amelanistic? PIC

seris7 Oct 08, 2004 04:31 AM

This is a baby cornsnake I bought in a pet shop in L.A.Is it a plain amelanistic or do you see something strange in it?

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.
Andrea.

We've seen similar pics of a hatchling in the last few months. After a couple of sheds the orange started coming through on what originally looked like "bald" patches and it looked like turning into a standard, but really pretty, Amel. It'd be interesting to see your guy in a few weeks - could you post another pic after its next shed?

It looks a lot like an amel jungle corn...a hybrid. (corn snake x california king snake)

Well, i am also doubtful it could be an amel jungle corn. Doubtful thing is that the head is tipycal in shape and pattern to the cornsnake's head, that's why I am confused. Maybe a 3/4 cornsnake 1/4 kingsnake?

Thanks for your replies?
Andrea.

It very much looks like an amel jungle corn to me. Remember, an animal need not be a 50-50 split to be a jungle corn. It need only be a hybrid created by crossing corn blood with kingsnake blood (usually California king), and the percentages are really irrelevant.

Sad that the pet shop from which you got it was either too ignorant or too dishonest to label the animal as it appears to be. However, I would just say that such is not at all far from the norm when dealing with a large percentage of pet shops in this country.

I could be wrong, and that could be a wildly unique amel in relation to its pattern and coloration...

But I really, REALLY doubt.

Hope that helps a bit

I have produced some of these, and it is hard to tell based on the traits you see in an individual animal. I base my call as a Jungle on the large areas where the black pigmentation would normally be.
