Is there something wrong with my burm...?

iluvblackfrancis Oct 08, 2004 12:05 PM

I got my burm in July, and they told me it was about three months old. I've feed him once a week since. He hasn't grown much, as far as I can tell, and I definatly can't see him being 8' by the time he's 15 months at this rate. I have missed a few feedings, but only two or three. He's never refused food either.

What exactly are you feeding him?

jasonmattes Oct 08, 2004 02:41 PM

If its eating weekly it should be growing.....your not feeding mice are you???
You may need to feed bigger or more food...my burm is about 9 months old and around 5ft...
He just ate one of my old breeder rats a couple days ago...

Def start small rats now, my burm is a year old about 8 foot and eat collasule rats weekely.

While I disagree that burms should never be fed mice, I do agree that perhaps small rats are in order here.
It is rare for a young growing burm to refuse them.
You still don't mention how big your burm is, or how many mice at each feeding, and the frequency of feeding.
One thing you cant be with a burm, is you can't be cheap with food. They need it, and need lots.
This is a lesson to be learned now when your burm is young.
Having a 15' burmese python on your home that is majorly hungry, is grounds for a catastrophe.
Feed your burm well...keep them happy.
Give us some more info. But I would say, if your burm is eating mice, then there is nothing run with it except it's being underfed.
3'-5'. Small rats...over 5' meds... 7'or more...time for small rabbits or collosal rats.Nobody said feeding a burm was'nt going to cost money.

My burm is probably a little longer than three feet, but I'm not sure, I don't know how to measure him. I was feeding mice because that's what I thought I was supposed to do at this size, not because I'm cheap. I'll get him a small rat at his next feeding then. How big should the rat be?

if your burm is about 3'...then a small rat is in order. Go to a pet shop that sells rats for feeders, and just ask for a small rat.
It might not be a bad idea to check one of the rodent suppliers here online, and order a dozen for future use, because youa re gonna pay twice as much at a pet shop.
Mice are fine. For small hatchlings.
Switch your burm over to small rats. In a month or so, your burm might take two smalls.Try one for now,and let your snake tell you if a second one is in order. He'll be hunting around his enclosure in a couple of days if he is still hungry. If so, the next feeding use two smalls.I've had growth rates of as much as 8 inches per month. I've averaged 4".By 5ft, it's time for mediums. Some folks even use large rats at that size.
And please...get your self a book on burm care. In less than a year you will be dealing with a very strong, 7ft or more snake.
Take the time and learn.
A large hungry burm can be a dangerous animal.
Ask questions here, but go get yourself a book...perhaps even two different ones. And learn all you can.
Let us now how your snake is feeding and growing.

I've looked for books on burms, and the only one I found lacked much info, so I didn't buy it. Although, I did research greatly on the care, but it was on the internet. I didn't buy the animal before I did the research either, I had planned for years on getting one. Any way, thanks, and I'll stick around the forum.

In all my years of doing this snake thing... ( I'm 47), I've never had a problem converting from mice to rats, rats to rabbits..etc.
Oh wait...I have a BP now that wont convert to f/t from p/k.
Other than that, I've never had a problem. And I've been doing this since I was a kid.
What works for one, may not work for others. Does'nt make anyone wrong or right. You do what works for you, I do what works for me...we give our answers and opinions in the forums here, and then it's up to the reader to decide which idea works best...or combo of ideas. And they go and learn from there.
Just as I'm still learning.
And I hope I never stop learning.
