Missing FBTs

I know absolutely nothing about toads. I work in a school. One of our teachers has been keeping Fire belly toads for at least a year. They seem to be dissapearing latley. She has lost three this school year. My question is are they escape artist. I keep snakes and know how quick they can get out if the lid is not secure. When investegating her tank I noticed the cord to the pump running out of the corner with a very small gap. Its a ten gallon. The one frog she has left seems very small to me. Can they jump high enough, or crawl up the cord to escape? Any responses would be greatly appreciated.

Fire bellies are masters of excape. If there is a way to get out they will. I have one toad that tries to get out..while another always tries to get back in when he is out.
