Repti-Bark, OK to use?

chimbakka Oct 08, 2004 01:35 PM

I got a package of repti bark to put in my brevs' terrarium, and it smells a lot stronger than I would have expected. I just want to check and see if it's ok to use... thanks!

Hi,
Please read my post below "Veiled Chameleon... I really need help on this one...Part 2" pertaining to repti-bark. I know alot of people use it but I personally would use something smaller in size.

My terrarium only has r. brevs in it. They are tiny, and couldn't possibly lift a piece with their tounge let alone get it into their mouth. I do not use substrate with my panther cham.
i'm more worried about any fumes that may be given off... Do you know if this product does that?

severa Oct 08, 2004 03:29 PM

I think that is is bark from fir tree but not sure. Look and see if it says on the bag. Anyhow, fir is not supposed to be harmful to reps, but if it is the fumes you are still a little worried about, I would maybe try soaking it in hot water for a day and them letting it sun dry or just air it out a few days. Maybe that will get rid of some of the potency.

u know i'd still wouldn't use it kuz i mean, it's just another hiding place for a cricket and i swear to god they'd hide until they die and it's so retarded why can't they realize there just food and need to get eatin' ... but there arboreal correct, why use a substrate just another chore in the long run !

lele Oct 08, 2004 07:05 PM

The substrate is necessary b/c these chams need high humidity, thus a tank as opposed to cage.

you are right, the crix do hide and that is why I cup fed. one of mine only hunted so there were always a few crix loose but I always left food out for the crix so they wouldn't dine on my brevi's. ;/ Plus the chams slept on narrow branches that the crix rarely bothered to travel! lol

Aren't they just the cutest? I was origionally going to get r. spectrum, and these came instead. At first i was perterrbed, but now i'm so happy!! They all have different personalities showing already, and are so cute!!
What kind of dish did you use to cup feed, and how did you set it up?
right now i'm just throwing crix in and leaving food for them. I haven't seen any of them eat yet, they are not comfy around me yet...

chimbakka Oct 08, 2004 09:07 PM

LOL yeah crix are dumb. Brev's need to have substrate, they are leaf chams and not totally aboreal. They are set up in a 3.5' long terrarium. That's the only reason i'm asking about substrate. They have coconut husk underneat, and sand and gravel under that. The bark helps keep in moisture, they need 80-90%constantly.
I don't use any substrate for my panther btw.

Hi Lindsay,

When I had my brevi's that is what I used. The smell is stronger when the bag is first opened, it will subside once you have it in the tank with everything else and is safe to use. They rarely even touched ground. here is a pic of my set up. You can see the layering which helped with drainage.

yes, that is perlite in the mix but there was a layer of mesh b/t it and the upper substrate. I used to make terrariums in FL and this was a rather elaborate setup, well, the part underground. I had screening rolled in tubes for the plants to set in on top of small stones so the soil would not get saturated.

and here is Makeda at her feeding cup. She and Bart would use the cup, but Kaiya always hunted.

sure do miss my little guys...
