cat caught baby brown snake - need help ASAP

lele Oct 08, 2004 06:16 PM

I found a baby brown snake (about 4-5" long) outside today and moved it from the driveway to the garden. Tonight my (indoor) cat caught what looks like the same one in our kitchen!

Anyway, it is alive but listless. It will stick out its tongue but I do not know what to do for him. There seems to be a little bend just behind his head but that is his only injury. Every now and again he opens his mouth wide - trouble breathing?

I have other herps so have just about anything on hand to set him up well to get him better; UTH, repti-aid, feeders, cages, etc. so just tell me what to do. I will try to get a pic and post

thanks in advance!

OK, these are blurry but you can see the bend behind his head.

I know nothing about snake behavior so this may actually be defensive:

I put him on a tissue in a tiny plastic critter keeper. I then put that in a container with about an inch of hot water to warm him up. he began to slither around but b/c of bend he cannot turn right.

At first I thought his gaping was for air but now I am thinking it is just defense. He flipped himself on to his back a few times and I figured he was 'a gonner' but when I turned him back over he seems OK - other than what I just explained. So tell me what you think... I hope he makes it Maybe I'll keep him thru the cold winter.
his mouth is open in this one

thx - lele
