MEAN MEAN MEAN tegu

viperbitex Oct 08, 2004 07:05 PM

Hello, I have just recently aquired two adult blue tegus. The Male is about 3 years old, and about 3 1/2 feet long and he is NASTY! I got him, and a female of the same age and size, and she is wonderful. He is an exellent eater, but it is very difficult to feed him and change his water because he'd rather go after me as soon as I open the door then the food I give him. I have to lure him with cat food into a room where I can shut the door so I can get into his cage. When ever I get near his cage he's ramming the doors, biting at them, whipping them. And he is increadibly strong! When I take him out he rushes at me to bite, jumps at me to bite, and he knows the towel trick, so I have to have more then one because he'll snatch the towel, run off with it, then come back to try to get me!! He is in awsome condition, very hansome, very smart, and I make sure to give a him a divers diet. I have had other large lizads; moniter, iguanas, as well as large snakes, but he is by far the worse tempered reptile I have ever seen. Is there any hope for him being at all good tempered? The female is great, she's calm, good with lots of people, and never tried to bite or whip. Please, any suggestions for taming him at all would be great!! Thanx!!

costant handling would be best, and you should look into buying some real thick gloves till your tegu calms down either at homedepot,or lowes.Because tegu scratches, and specially bites are real painful

Thank you for the advise on getting gloves, but I don't think that will be enough, and I think that a full on bite from him would be more then just painful. I try letting him run around with me in the room, to get use to me, but all he wants to do is bite. He rushes at me, he jumps at me, and he bites my shoes. He grabs on and tries to death roll, so I think that wearing gloves would help stop punctures, but not broken bones. Do you think that I should get some sort of coller to hold him in place whilt I pet him or something where he can see that I'm nice and not lunch?
