Calcium Deposits...?

jason clark Jun 27, 2003 10:16 PM

I have a male veiled who is about 9 months old, he has grown a lot in the six months I have had him. One thing that has changed about him besides his colors and getting much bigger, his head is always much paler than the rest of his body, almost completely white. It was not like this when I bought him and doesnt go away when he sheds. I have been told by a few people that it was calcium deposits and I should boil my tap water before I mist him? Does this sound right? Any help is appreciated! Thanks for your time!

Jason

boiling the tap water will not get rid of calcium in it in fact it will increase the amount of calcium in it by decreasing the amount of water. The water boils away but calcium will not it stays there when you boil the water.
I have never heard of calcium turning a chameleons head white.
They turn white when they are shedding. Maybe the white is his coloring or it could be something wrong with him but it's hard to tell without seeing what you mean. Can you post a photo of him?

I know that the head turns white in a shed but even after he sheds, his head is always white. I cant post a pic, no digi cam, sorry. Its so hard to describe!

This is probabley not your problem, but make sure he's not getting thermal burns, check basking temps, make sure if he climbs 'ceiling' directley under light it's ok there. Bulbs against screen can fry a climber especally when he's cool as they won't move soon enought. I rescued an iguana this had happened to one time a few years ago, very ugly,Ol' Burnie had scars the rest of his life.
