In the past quarter of a century, I've kept many toads of many species sucessfully. I only use organic soil that has been sifted and is free of twigs, pebbles, cow chips or any sort of fertilzers or chemicals. I've heard bed-a-beast and eco-earth highly praised, but our vet agrees that for toads, soil is best. The debate will rage on, I'm sure, but for me, why mess with success? I've never had a frog or toad suffer an impaction in 26 years.
Toads in nature can and do die of impaction. They are varocious eaters. We try to safegaurd them from this by keeping the soil loose and passable should it be swallowed. Most toads wipe their worms off as the worm goes in the mouth, but some substrate can still be swallowed.
Soil is also considerably cheaper than eco-earth, so if you are giving them lots of depth to burrow in, in a 30 gallon or larger tank, eco-earth can be a pricey way to bed.
Anyway, we have several galleries on our website with our americanus tank set-ups over the years. Feel free to check it out.
