Leopard gecko-aquarium size?

canada-guy Oct 09, 2004 02:37 PM

Hi, I own an adult leopard gecko in a 10 gallon aquarium. I take care of him following the guidelines given by the Leopard Gecko manual, written by Philippe De Vosjoli (which states that a single leopard gecko can be kept in a 10 gallon aquarium). He is in good health and eats well.
The problem is a guy at a pet store told me he would be far better off in a 20 gallon size. I think he is just trying to make some money off of me. What aquarium size do you keep your leopard geckos in? I would be willing to buy a bigger sized cage if necessary, I just want to know if it is.

I house my baby in a 20 gallon. I feel it will be perfect size for him as he grows up.

Well, You can, But im sure any leo would be happier in a bigger tank. 10 gallons is fine, the rule is at least ten gallons per leo.

Thanks for the response. I plan to buy a 20 gallon aquarium for my leopard gecko ASAP.

You should try a 20 gallon long. It gives them more floor space because it is not as tall.

Hey Canadian guy, most likely the guy at the pet store is just trying to make money off of you. I housed my gecko in a 10 gallon for four years then switched to a long 15 gallon (same floor space as a 20). It streesed him out quite a bit, he acctually seemed less active in the larger tank, he was always hiding. Bottom line, if things are working for you right now and your gecko seems happy don't worry about it... unless you want to switch to a bigger tank. They are more fun to decorate, you can put more stuff in, and they allow for a better heat variance.

Where are you in Canada?
