garter snake maybe?

rusti Oct 09, 2004 03:07 PM

I live in southeast texas and I was down by the shore of a lake playin in the sand when I see something shiny black move around in the plants next to the water. I leaned over it and I saw a black snake with 2 maybe 3 yellow stripes down it's back. it was about 9-11" long and it had a red and black tongue. I was thinkin garter or ribbon snake maybe?

thanks

Although there are eastern gartersnakes in SE Texas, they are very uncommon. Western Ribbonsnakes are abundant however, so I suspect it was a Western Ribbonsnake.
