Handling a new blood

Misskiwi67 Oct 09, 2004 05:18 PM

My first blood had her first meal on wednesday, and I was just curious if I could begin holding her or if I should wait until she gets another meal in her. I was planning on only having her out for about 15 minutes or so, I just want to start getting her used to being handled. The couple times I've checked up on her the past two weeks she has huffed and puffed at me, and I want get her used to me before she gets big. So, is it ok, or would you wait another week? It seems like forever since I've seen her! LOL

Alinda,

You should be ok to handle her now. If your worried put some gloves on and it should calm her down a bit. Remember to watch both ends too! If she stays real cage defensive try taking her out til she calms down and then removing the hide and handling her in the cage a bit, it seems to help for me. Good luck with your little one!

Hooray!! I finally got my new baby out. Just like I said, I kept it short, and she was only out for about 10 minutes. She didn't seem bothered at all when I moved the wood chips away(she doesn't use her hide boxes) or when I picked her up. But then, I know better than to hover over snakes when removing them from their cages, so I don't think I made her nervous by sticking my hand in her cage. She was tense and hyperventilating at first, and I let her calm down before readjusting my hands so they supported her completely. She then took a chance to look around. She did try to run once, and I just put my hand under her and held her where she had no chair arms to run to. I think the open spaces scared her more than I did, because she always kept her face away from me. I managed to startle her twice (once when setting her in her cage), but she calmed down quickly, so overall I would say she is a very sweet, but spooky little baby, and my first handling experience was a success! I feel bad for making her so nervous, and hope she grows out of her fear quickly.

I am still amazed at how beautiful she is. I never got a good chance to really appreciate how sleek their faces are. They aren't chubby like ball pythons, thats for sure. This was the first time I had a good look at her eyes, and at the pattern on her sides. I can't wait until she grows up, bloods are such beautiful animals, I am SOOO glad I got one!
