since everyone is talking about pastels, heres my story

leosandsnakes Oct 09, 2004 08:10 PM

well i work all summer to save money and when daytona rolled around i blew it all in about an hour and a half... one of my main purchases was a pastel, i bought a male from twi international.... when he popped it at the table, i didn't think to see what sex it was... well a couple of nights ago it needed to be soaked to get some shed off, i thought why don't i check it, well i popped it and its female.... i picked it up for around 1250 less than a normal female pastel so i think it was a good deal...

Does anyone else have any other similar experiences

Thanks
Stephen

You said you spent 1250 less? Is it an adult or a well known line of Pastel (Ruppell, Blonde?) Because I went into a show with and purchased a Nerd Line Blonde Pastel Female for $1600 and a normal Pastel male for around $900. The normal females are going for around 2K. If you got it for even around $750 thats unbeleivable. Good purchase.
About the sexing. I haven't even checked on the two that I purchased. I am hoping that I have a male and female out of the two or it may be hard for me to get my super that I have dreamed about. I also want to breed the male this year. He is currently 550g and eating two mice a week. I have to slow him down so he doesn't become overweight. Good luck.

Well my story isn't with a pastel but my breeder/dealer friend got three adult balls and I bought the largest one without bothering to sex it since it was my first adult. Well later that day we went to another breeder's house and he popped it to find out I'd bought myself a 4 ft. female for under $100. Then I had the same thing happen with some new balls I bought. Guess I'm just lucky. lol. Sera

We picked up this girl from a local who no longer had room for her. Once we got there, I sexed it and it was a she so I took it. This was 10 wks. ago and she was 2400 grams then and 4' 7" long.......Here's a pic for reference....

picked up Hiss from an owner who had her for 8 years and his brother had her for 2 years before that. Well they decided they liked their iguana more and wanted the nice big cage the snake had for the iguana so I got her for free almost a year ago. She is above 5 lbs. I haven't checked how long she is, but she was a very good deal.

Except if you only have one you'd rather have a male as he can mate with five normal females to make a pile of pastels.

I doubt TWI sold you a male as a female....if he would have sold you a female that ended up being male...I can believe that...but hemipenes are unmistakable and I'm sure he made sure he saw them before he sold them to you. I just think you sexed the snake wrong yourself......I'd say get another opinion....

That's what happened to me, got a nice little reduced 04 female from Wyatt which turned out to be male when probed a few days later. Luckily there local here so I have to catch him to trade it for a female still.

I agree with Luke, most likely if he popped it for you at the table he only double checked to make certain-sure you were getting a male. Best bet is to probe him or have someone that knows how to do so.
