live? dead? f/t? which do you prefer?

maestrOwen Oct 09, 2004 10:15 PM

I've always fed my snakes live mice and rats...and I stick around to make sure it's going okay

though, there have been a few incidents:
I once fed Ozzy and the mouse's teeth were stuck in the top of his head...although he's none the worse for wear (it was like...four years ago and he's still kicking)

and then there was that time I fed Daphne an eyeless mouse...apparently, the other mice in the tank had gotten to it :/ and damn, that mouse put up a fight...it took the mouse about 20 minutes to die and it bit Daphne's neck and she bled a little and has a small scar but she's also doing great

and I have a bunch of rats in a cage in my room....I don't breed them; they breed themselves but I swear George Washington Carver II is the happiest rat in the world...all he ever does when he's awake is eat, play with babies, and have sex with the two girl rats....it's like the male fantasy realized

but yeah I have a steady supply of rats and I don't like killing them...I'd rather let the snakes do what comes naturally to snakes

anyway....how do you prefer to feed?

wondering...

If there is a good supplier of healthy live food, I prefer live. F/T is just too messy. When I start feeding rats I will go to pre-killed to prevent injuries, and I never leave live food (with eyes open) in the cage without me in the room.

There were times where I could not get live food for my sand boa, and in those cases I fed F/T. Don't you wish all snakes would eat whatever you had for them?

I know F/T is probably better, and when you have a lot of animals to feed, its the only way to go. But since I just have one, I take the necessary precautions and that is much easier for me.

I used to feed live till my male blood(USUL a.k.a. BIGGWORM)who was my only snake back then, got bit in the neck by a large rat.Ever since then FROZEN.I didn't want to chance the rat biting his eye!!!Also I love my animals too much to know that they could get hurt. Now I have nine snakes so it's more economical to feed frozen. It's alot safer because all or most of the parasites that a rat could be harboring is killed durring the freezing process.Hope this helps,by the way I think your male rat has a great life too.
