? for the SERIOUS HOG ISLAND PURISTS

hogglover Oct 10, 2004 01:10 AM

What is the general feeling about crossing lineages,ie;Sears x Reed or Lemke x Rentfro(sorry Gus,I know you didnt want any lines named after you,for example only).I am not talking about crossing BCI ssp.Strictly pure Hog Island as best as can be represented, crossed only by lineage. All opinions appreciated and respected.Thanx Marcus

I believe, as long as the Hog's genetics are verified, that you should outcross between the lines. You also forgot to mention the Schuett and Crutchfield lines. Both of my Hog's are Sear's line. But all of the lines mentioned are pure. My male came from Jeff Ronne and my female came from Mark Wendling's stock. If I had a chance at another female from another line that I could prove as pure, I would jump at it. So IMO, I say go for it, you will just be increasing genetic diversity while still producing pure animals, something the Hog's need desperately.

are from a Hog is a Hog only naming them after the breeders is like a porsche or a ford only different, if you know what I mean, people like to take too much credit for what THE ANIMALS HAVE PRODUCED. for instance can I breed my Hog Island Tiger Boa to a Sears or Jcpenny line Hog ?They are still Hogs and if the person behind the Hogs know the excact location or the exact Islnad in which they came from they are still the same Hog just gone through a selective breeding through which the breeder is personally looking for.

The problem with non-verified Hogs is that when the Cayos Cochinos were stripped of all the boas on them, importers started taking light specimens off of mainland Honduras, so a Hog is not always a Hog. Having verified lines does not guarantee a pure specimen but if you go to 90% of the people that sell Hogs and ask them to trace the lineage, they can't. The names are just an easy way to trace the lineage. The names are not taking anything away from the animals breeding accomplishments, they are usually the names of the people that import them.
