Iguana Salad Poll

pythonmomma Oct 10, 2004 10:32 AM

Ok guys, if you went into your local herp store and you saw a sign that read "Iguana Salad Bar" would this get you wondering? Well, what if that store offered to make an iguana salad for you, with all the greens veggies and fruits that you chosse and put calcium on it if you wanted, would you think about doing it? What if they made it right in front of you with gloves and sanatized utensils and put the salad in a fresh gladware container thing? How many of you think you would use this service one a week? What about once a month? Lemme know, I am thinking of maybe doing this at my work. Just wanna know if there might even be an interest in it. Thanks guys.

Actually this is something I had considered doing. I had so much extras in my garden last year that I had planned to give.. or sell.. my extras to my local pet store to be sold for iggies and other herbivorous/omnivorous herps, as well as to feed to their poor little baby igs and other store herps. But kinda got put on the back burner after my little one was born in April.. garden kinda got to be to much. But if there is a market for it you may be successful. Could also do it as a specail order type of thing.. where they can order so much to pick up on certain days or whatever.

I would be very interested in buying some iguana salad ! It's very tough around here to find the right greenies . Right now i'm ok with some wild dandelion but this winter it's going to be vrey tough to find greenies. The best i can find is occasional chicoree and aragula. I will try to grow my own dandelion...But if i can find an iguana salad bar...well that would be VERY nice !

I think it's a great idea. I would buy it and offer it to my iggy.

If it were on my most visited highways and byways, i sure as heck would, and you could name your price.

Well, the store is about 16 miles off of 70 in Kansas, so if you are ever over in this part of the world.

After computing the cost of greens and gladware I belive the prices are going to be as followed. There will be a $1 discount for people who bring back their cleaned gladware thingy.

Large Salad with 2 veggies and 1 fruit $5
Medium Salad with 2 veggies and 1 fruit $4
Small Salad with 2 veggies and 1 fruit $3

Large bowl of greens $4
Medium bowl of greens $3
Small bowl of greens $2

Add another veggie for $.50
Add another fruit for $.25

I think that is how it will work. I am going to take advance orders as well. Like people can say "I want a large salad and a bowl of greens ready every tuesday morning" and I will have it their for them. I don't know how I am going to get it going though. I don't think I can have the greens just sitting around in the store fridge until someone shows up, but I might have to for awhile, take a limited supply in or something.

I think I would use the service once a week. I buy food once a week and prepare it every morning. I used to prepare it one week at a time, but my iggys are bigger now and I don't have to use the food processor anymore so I got out of the habit of doing it that way. My iggys are eating a lot again so it would be easier to have it already made and just add to their dish during the day as needed.
The only problem I see with providing that service would be the amount of people needing it in your area and keeping the vegies fresh. It may cost you a lot to be able to keep fresh vegies on hand with the possibility of never using them and them going bad. Maybe taking phone orders for people and then going and getting the vegies would be a way to prevent that. I hope it works out if you do it. I know it would be easier for me to do it that way because I have 4 iggys to feed, and they are HUNGRY.

I can see it now. They will be popping up like Starbucks all over the place. LOL. It is definately a good idea. I hope you go ahead and try it.

i think that is an great idea. i spend about 30 -40 bucks on food a week for all of my reptiles. so it would be cheeper for me to keep doing it the way i am. but not everyone has as many animals as i do. they would love to just buy it all ready to serve. i think it would entice people to feed their igs better too. i really love this idea. i just started working at a pet store that dont feed there igs that well. i tried telling them about a much better diet but they changed nothing. i think i will sugest something like this to them and maybe if they can make a profit of of it it will make them feed the igs better.

I got my store to feed the herps better (they had been feeding romain and such), by pointing out that (at least out here) the good greens (collards and such) actually are cheaper than lettuce

I think it's a wonderful idea!

I do have a suggestion, though: here at the zoo (the BIG zoo, not my house) greens and vegetables are brought in on the "produce truck". What it is, is that every couple of days the local grocery stores have to get rid of the food that is not fit for human consumption. There's nothing wrong with it, but due to federal regulations, it cannot be served. I know of a few keepers who have grabbed some lunch off the produce truck (I'm not kidding). So, anyway, these grocery stores donate the produce to the zoo. The keepers have to go through the usable vs. the non-usable stuff, and there's a lot of non-usable stuff... but there's enough usable stuff for them to keep up with the program.

The best part is, they get a lot of exotic things, like kohlrabi, mustard greens, and kale, just because those are the things people are less likely to buy.

I don't know if you could actually sell the stuff that they gave you, but it might help you keep your prices down. It might be worth looking into.

This would be a service i would definatly use in the winter. In the summer i have a garden and grow almost all of ozzys food. But you have given me a idea, i could go to one of the big salad bars they have in the local grocery stores, and possibly get some of ozzys stuff in smaller quantity. Cause i find like i buy a whole canatlope, and alot goes to waste cause he doesnt get that much of it. Will just depend on what stuff they have on the salad bars. But a salad bar specifically for iggs or other herbivores sounds pretty cool to me. Tami
