Box turtles- tons of questions

Paullywog Oct 10, 2004 01:05 PM

So first of all, do all american box turtles repuire the same care or are three-toed, eastern, ornate, and western box turtles all the same in care. IF not, can i just have the care sheet or whatever for the eastern? What size of enclosure do they need? What exactly do they eat? IS an outdoor enclosure during the summer a good idea? Also please add in anything else i should know before i get a box turtle. I'm asking these questions because i want a happy animal. Thank you!

ps sorry for all the questions!

All box turtles do better when kept outdoors. I keep mine outdoors all year long. They hibernate during the Winter which stimulates them to breed in the spring. Not all box turtles require the same care. Onates and desert live in desert/prarie conditions. Easterns and 3 toeds live in forest type conditions.
I have a few Easterns. They live outdoors in a pen, I feed them every other day. Vegetables, fruits, meats.... http://www.tortoise.org/archives/terrapen.html#eastern
