My Iggys new cage

AlteredMind99 Oct 10, 2004 01:13 PM

Someone gave a green iguana to my fiance, he has now grown too big for the cage they had him in and we are preparing to build him a much larger one. (9ft long, 6 feet high, 4 feet wide) With basking shelves and a big "pond" for him to cool off in. My question is about substrate, what is the best substrate to use in a cage this big? I was thinking cage carpet, but wanted to get some opinions first

i am using indoor outdoor carpet right now and i hate it. it gets very exspensive because it frays and gets wet when they poo so you cant just wipe up the poo. you have to wash and replace carpet everytime they go. i have some very large enclosures too and have yet to find a substrate im happy with so i hope you get some good sugestions.

On the bottom of our old reptarium i used the carpet. i loved how easy it was. we used 2 pieces, one in the cage and one ready to be put in. when tiny would poop on it we would wash one and replace it with another. the edges never frayed either. guess a differnt manufacturer.

In tiny's new cage we use that fake tile(forgot what it is called) it is like a huge mat that looks like tiles. wipes up very easily.

Hi sounds like this is going to be a really nice iggy cage, wish i had space for one that big. I recommend tile or linoleum on the bottom and i use newspaper over it. Its very easy to change, i recycle my newspapers, its easy to clean the tile and its safe for the iggy. Substrates like corn cob bedding, cedar chips, etc arent safe for igs cause they can eat it and get impacted etc. Hope that helps. Tami
