Homozygous leathal (continued from below) Albino to Albino

neilgolli Oct 10, 2004 03:08 PM

according to a post below by amazonreptile ablino to ablino breeding has not produced any offspring. Can everyone share there experiences with this and what they know on the subject... Thank you

"It is pretty well known in one snake mutation. Albino Lampropeltis ruthveni seem to not be able to reproduce with each other only producing albino offspring when bred to heteros of the opposite gender.

I have personally spoken to scores of breeders of this form and have yet to find a albino to albino breeding. Pretty big names too. They all report bad eggs or dead in the egg babies. No viable albino babies. Bummer"

I asked Tom Carlton of Cypress Creek reptiles about this a few months ago and he said he has produced many perfect clutches from albino to albino ball pythons. Could you share the manes of some of the breeeders who claimed fertility problems with homozygous to homozygous breeding?

He's talking about another form of snake.. a kingsnake not a ball python. Albino balls are able to produce albinos from breeding albino to albino.

I no longer raise the ruthveni, but many people have raised albinos from albino x albino breedings. I got rid of mine about 5 years ago, but even though they can be a difficult snake to breed, especially snakes under 3 yrs of age, they can in fact be bred. I even had one female (albino) that double clutched for me several years.

My post had nothing to do with ball pythons except it responded to a point Randy R made about possible lethal genes. He is right to be wary as it is known in at least one other taxa. I have made bold the taxa I was discussing when I mentioned lethal genes. See the text from my original post above. Albino Lampropeltis ruthveni was the subject of my post.
