West Nile Virus and toads...

Laurah Jun 28, 2003 12:23 AM

Does anyone know if west nile virus is transmittable to toads from infected mosquitos they eat? From what I heard I know birds, horses, dogs and humans can get it from being bitten by an infected mosquito - but can it be passed to amphibians? Also, do mosquitos bite amphibians? The basement door was accidently left open after dusk tonight and thousands of mosquitos are now inhabiting the room in which I keep my toads! I set a flashlight on and inside the cage to attract the mosquitos down into the cage. I'm hoping my toads will get some nice mosquito snacks tonight but just worried about the west nile disease. It has been found in mosquitos in this area and since it has been VERY wet this year there are much more than usual. -Laurah

Although WNV was found last year in crocodilians, I don't foresee a jump being made to amphibians.
