Cats and reptiles

IMO letting cats roam around your reptiles cages is not a good idea.I just letting out a simple warning for people who own them.If you keep your tanks on a dresser or something high dogs probably aren't gonna get. However cats will.Just a word of advice for cat and reptile owners.Completely seperate the cat and your reptiles almost every time I come to check forums someones animal is attacked by a cat.Just wanted to say....

I believe that is a given and no one in their right mind would let their cats roam around their reptiles.

I actually have a very protective cat. One of my frogs escaped so tc (my cat) blocked it from going anywhere and cried until I came in and put the frog away. She is my little warden.

My siamese mix enjoys watching "lizard TV"--the antics of a large tank of golden geckos. My 3 cats have never harmed any escaped herps who wandered into the house. They will find the herp, then sit there and stare at where it's hiding, then at me, as if to say, "Hey, it's here--come catch it!" They are also fine with the beardie hanging out in the evening. However, I finally had to exile the siamese from the herp room since the presence of cat fur in reptile tanks drives me crazy.

althea

Do you realize you just insulted yourself?

xcrashx21 Oct 11, 2004 05:04 PM

Mistakes happen all I was doing was sharing the fact I have a very protective animal and both were perfectly fine. You learn from your mistakes and I don't feel I have insulted myself by sharing an experience.

xcrash, I think lady pain was being rude to me and not you. I said that no one in there right mind would let their cat roam around their lizards and to clarify things, I did not let my cat roam around my lizards, the door wasn't completely closed, the cat jumped a baby gate, opened the door and managed to pry itself in the cage.

sorry then my apologies to lady pain.

I totaly agree, dont let them roam, and yes many owners wouldn't. but i didn't think about this until.. I had a very bad expieriance w/ cats and my beardie, accidently left cage a crack open, and i have 3 cats. the cats got the lizard and carried him around the house until, i found the cat playing with him. Beardie had to stay at the vet a couple days where they put antibiotics in him like crazy. He still has a small scar on his back. if you do have an experience like mine, bring ur lizard or reptile to vet immediatly, or the cats saliva will kill them in less that 8 hours. now i am very safe w/ cats and my reptile..

most cats are gonna be smart enouph not to tangle with a full grown beardie

` These two have been non-aggressive towards each other since the Boa was a baby, almost 6 years.
` I don't know about Beardies, but Boids have a wide range of adaptive behavior. You've just got to pick the right one, or have a disaster.

Reason I made this post is because my brother is moving back home and he has a stinking cat.The room he is staying in contains my reptiles and I told my mom straight up I would purposely let my dog into the room to take care of the cat lol.Its a mean one too!Won't let anyone but him touch.Plus cats aren't the most elegant smelling animal in the world.

Ok lets not totally beat down cats. I have 2 cats and both are very cool. My 25lb cat kicks my 40lb dogs butt. And the dog runs from him like the cat is so evil. But it's all a game to the cat, kinda like haha look at the tough dog run from a cat. I have found the same cat in one of my beardie cages a very long time ago, and they were hanging out together like old friends. Also this cat was best friends with our parakeet. I have some great pictures of them eating out of the same bowl and the bird riding on the cats back and them kissing. But Needless to say I started covering the tank after that just to be safe. And that beardie would run to the other cat when she was out and cuddle with him. They can get along but I think only if the cat has been raised with the critters that are to be the pray.
