Q about caging 2 weeks to 3 months old panthers

LordOfTheLizards Oct 10, 2004 11:02 PM

I'm planning to house my cham in a 19"x12"x10" (lxhxw), this is when it is standing normally

could i place it so i'ts 19" high? so its standing sideways and the mesh is on a side? this is so theres more space for him to climb up and down and sothe ventilation is on its side and i thought it would be better this way

and up to what age can a cham be kept in this size aquarium?

thanx

oh, also how do u edit ur signature (in these forums)

To the best of my knowledge (which isn't much), chams can only be kept in aquariums as hatchlings, requiring more ventilation and hence needing some type of screen or mesh enclosure, when they are older. My personal preference is for the screened cages (can be found online at any number of sites, look around for best price, or try eBay - tho they my not be the cheapest. Also, there is one site that makes custom cages with a larger mesh screen, which "helps prevent lost toes & claws", but for the life of me I cnnot remeber what it is, I think if you do a search for "custom chameleon cages" you can find it, the guy is based out of Margate, FL). They tend to keep the food from escaping, and it's a little more sturdy - I keep a lot of lights, etc on the top of the cage, and I have a feeling the reptarium would have caved by now...
Anyway, I had a point with all this when I started... Oh, yes, how long can you keep a cham in a tank... I would say 3 months is pushing it (someone correct me if I am wrong). Their cage tends to get stagnant w/o proper air circulation, and they need the room to move about.
Hope that helped. Good luck with your chams!

I keep/have kept my hatchling panther chameleons in a 15 gallon
(long) tank...and have done this for quite a few years with no
problems. That's not to say that you can't turn your tank on
end...but where will you put the UV light then? If you put it
over the glass, it will not be of much use.

I don't know if the ventilation will be better that way either.

I keep/have kept my hatchling panthers in these tanks until
they are 3 or 4 months old. It could be done for a little longer
depending on growth rate of the chameleon...and providing that
there is only one in the tank.

Hope this helps!

You said..."oh, also how do u edit ur signature
(in these forums"...sorry but I can't help you with that.
