Sub-species question

embibble Oct 11, 2004 05:55 AM

Ok here we go...

I have read that that Brown anoles have 5 subspecies;

sagrei
ordinatus
greyi
luteosignifer
nelsoni

The most common being Bahaman (Anolis sagrei Ordinatus) and cuban (Anolis sagrei Segrei)

Now what exactly is the difference between the subspecies? Is there a distinct trait that makes them seperate?

At a pet store near me the brown anoles are sold as "Bahaman", but what are the chances that they are actually that subspecies and that one only?

Not likely, IMO. I don't know anything about the brown subspecies, I've just read (possibly dated) information that many different species are commonly named "brown anole." Makes sense, considering how many are brown and similar--a different species of brown anole I saw in the Dominican Republic looked the same to me as the ones I see here in Florida.

Anyway, "Bahaman" or "Bahamian" anole is just another one of the common names I've heard. It very well could be that it has a specific subspecies associated with it, but the pet store is just likely using the selling name.

Oh, and I'm very interested in knowing--just which islands are these Bahamian brown anoles found on? I've been on several islands and never seen any, but maybe I just haven't been south enough Yes, I AM looking for a good reason to go.
