Tegu seizure?

emumaster17 Oct 11, 2004 08:02 AM

My young arg b/w tegu recently started shaking. When he stops and lays down he starts trembling. He also shakes in his sleep. When he is up walking around he seems fine. He is normal and curious about everything. He has seemed a little more agitated than usual when I handle him.
I was just wondering if anyone knows what it may be.
It did start when he started shedding.

Thanks.

There are a number of things that could be wrong with him or there may be nothing since I am not a vet I would highly reccomend you get him to one ASAP. If I had to make a guess I would say it sounds like the little guy is starting to suffer from MBD metabolic bone disease. You should immediatly try some UV light a full spectrum I would also reccomend dusting his food with calcium powder that contains D3. I do not know how long you have had your tegu or what conditions he is in so I am not meaning to offend if you are doing these things already they are just some advice. Also if you do have him under uv bulbs how old are they? They have a life span and while the light may still work the uv part of it is not. Good luck to you.

It sounds like MBD to me as well, you could try using that eco terra electrolyte supplement its suppose to help reverse and prevent MBD. I'm not a vet either so you should still bring him to one ASAP

Thanks for the advice. Any one know of any vets around Atlanta GA.

He is in a 260 gallon aquarium. He is about 3-4 months old. He was bred and raised outside in South Florida. He has one reptisun uv and 2 powersun uv bulbs in his enclosure. He eats all of the superworms and crickets he wants daily. They are dusted almost every feeding. Once a week they are dusted with a vitamin supplement. Temps are good they are at about 110-120 on the basking side and 80-85 on the other side. Humidity is aroung 60%.

I work for a pet store and I don't trust the vet we take our reptiles to. Almost every sick reptile that we take to him ends up dying. I think he overdoses them on meds. Please let me know if there are any good vets around Atlanta. He has been acting normal for the past couple of days. I havent seen him shaking lately but I would still like him to see a vet.

I don't think its mbd. Ive delt with that before at the store, but you never know.

Thanks again for the advice.

First instinct is that it's MBD. But you've already gotten a lot of that. Do a search through the posts and you'll find many postings about how to find a vet in your area. I think there's one not too far down on this page even.

Another possibility is a trachea abnormality. The reason I suggest this is because my colombian has such an abnormality and it cause seizure like episodes. He would thrash around and his tail would do this weird snake like curving back and forth, and he would gape the whole time. By the time that he came out of it he was completely zapped of all energy. It took three visits to the vet (and multiple blood tests and x-rays) before he realized that it was an abnormality of the trachea. The trachea was almost completely closed due to scar tissue holding the two sides together. So whenever he would move around too quickly, he would have a hard time getting enough oxygen and then would panic and go into a fit. It had to be surgically treated, but he's doing well now. My vet isn't sure what caused it. It could be something that he injested that scraped it up pretty bad.

So definitely have the vet check out the trachea while your little guy is there.

Thanks. I found a vet that will see him tomorrow.
It maybe be some kind of abnormality like that. I have noticed that he has started sneezing a little bit and wheezing.

Thanks everyone for the help.
