Light cycles

AtelerixMel Oct 11, 2004 11:49 AM

Should I be shortening my cham's light hours soon? I know this is done with some other herps. Currently I have him on 12 hours on and 12 off, but it's starting to get dark earlier. At the end of the month, it will be dark by 6pm. Whose stupid idea was Daylight Savings time anyway, and who exactly is daylight being saved for!?

It won't be dark in my room that earlier though, since I am usually up late.

I THINK most people do change the light cycle. I am swtiching to 10 on / 14 off very soon.

I have a male Veiled that is about a year and a half old. Currently his light cycles are set to be on for 12 hours on and 12 hours off. I live in Arizona and I am wondering if I should adjust his light cycle to 10 hours on and 14 hours off? Winter is approaching and is the change in light cycles recommended? Thanks to all who reply.

I would think that the best light cycle would be that of
the country that the chameleon came from...if you want to
make things as close to "natural" as possible. Just a thought!

According to the following website, the length of day in Aden,
Yemen right now is from 5:50 AM to 5:42 PM.

The purpose of this EST, I believe is to let people enjoy
more daylight in the evening hours without having to have
lights on until later. I still don't know why we have to change
back in the fall if that's the case. I'd rather get up in the
dark if need be, and have it light for an hour longer in the
evening.

That's exactly what I'm saying! Why don't we 'spring ahead' in the fall? Then instead of it getting dark and 6 it would get dark at 8! Who cares if it's light out at 7am when I'm usually sleeping!

But I have a panther, so I don't think the daylight hours in Yemen would do me any good.

Oops! I should have noticed that below your signature it said
panther not veiled, Melissa! I guess I was remembering part
of Syd's post and part of yours!

Funny...but the times for sunset and sunrise aren't much
different right now between Yemen and Madagascar. Note that
with the site below, you can look at the times for each
month....and for other countries/cities too.

Here's the page for a city in Madagascar.

A better site, eh??
