UTH and melamine

matnga Jun 28, 2003 02:46 AM

i am building a 25 inch long by 12 inch deep x 16 inch tall enclosure tommorow for my leos. i had the idea to mount a fixture in the top butwhat if i cut a piec of plexi glass to atach my UTH toand use the little bumps to keep it off the melilene surface would that be better than over head lights ?

what i would do is pull it off my 10 gal aqurm stick it on the bottom side of a piece of plexiglass put it in side the enlcourse than lay my substrate over the top of it? and use the little bumps to keep it up off the floor.i use the lizzard carpet found at pet stores for a substrate.

I saw this pretty cool idea somewhere for a uth and a home made enclosure. all you have to do is cut a section of the bottom piece of melamine out. Get a piece of glass to fit that piece and then stick the glass in there and seal it in there. Then ont he outside of the enlclosure stick the uth where the glass is. Make sure your cage has little supports to give the uth a little room to air out. Also, it isnt such a good idea to peal them off and then restick them, at least this is what it says on the package.

I've done it, and have some pictures of the contraption I built. Check the link (Webshots album) for pictures of my setup.

I'm not a carpenter, so the thing isn't pretty, but it sure works well.

I mount my in a peice of card with foil around it to direct the heat upwards.

Been using this for years without any problems what so ever.

I've peeled a couple UTH's off and reattached to other tanks, kind of spendy to waste. I foud to peel it realy slowly and don't bend it to much, they will peel off better when warm rather than cold.
