Pics for identification

cable2001 Oct 11, 2004 07:55 PM

Ok, as promised, here are a couple of pics. I was told when I bought these guys that they were Crotaphytus collaris. In an earlier thread, some doubt was cast.

And so, without further delay.......

Both are definitely young Crotaphytus bicinctores, the Great Basin Collared lizard.

They're great lizards!

It has some nice orange...probably around 2-3 months of age would be my guess. He looks pretty nice. Glad Fabian was able to shed some light onto the species. I had my doubts they were collaris.

Thanks for posting, and welcome to the forum!

I would have never even noticed the flattened tail if it weren't for the close-up pictures.

Thanks, Fabian, I'm glad to know the correct species!

So, Johne, if you think the second is a male, is the first a female, or another male. I hosestly can't tell and was planning to buy a magnifying glass for a vent scale check like Eve suggested.

I tried taking pics, but even with Macro I can't get a close-up to come out clear.

know? How long are they?
The second looks male, does he have a dark color throat/ dewlap , blackish, blue color, or maybe starting to get dark?

Also turn it over, see if there are black patches on the underside , on each side . Males have laterally compressed tails, and large inguinal patches/ blackish patches.

Males also have elongated snouts.

i would have thought that the first pic was male and the second was female. the first body shape reminds me of kaiser and in the second body shape the head looks really round to me. i just need to get a bicinctores female so i can learn the difference....there is a reptile show this weekend in san diego so i may just get one. ha ha!

I tried! I took about five pics of each, and none came out clearly. I'll try again tonight.

Johne thinks they are 2-3 months old. I'm at work right now, so I can't measure, but I'll get more info tonight.

They always seems to get that nice bold orange (juvenile male) markings at about that age...sometimes a little later. Just a semi-educated guess ;P

Hey, your guess is better than mine at this point! I didn't even know which species.

I've been reading everything I can find online about these guys, and am rapidly coming to believe that they are about the coolest lizards (but don't tell my anoles I said that!).

She'll even have a sexier look soon. I should be getting myself a new male yellowhead eastern collaris for the Utah area...a new male and female.

Probably be next week sometime before I see them.

that dude needs some meat on his bones. He has good color and pattern, and by the looks of it, he's not afraid to drink :P

I'd be feeding him 2-3 times a day until he bulks out a bit. Nice looking lizard, although I can't tell for certain if that is collaris or not...doesn't really resemble most of mine, but they call all be a bit different.

cable2001 Oct 11, 2004 09:58 PM

Yeah, I know. The one is definitely fatter than the other. The skinny guy seems reluctant to eat and sits and stares at the cricket or silkworm for a while before deciding to eat it. The fatter one scarfed down 4 silkworms yesterday and two more today.

I think part of the problem is that the temp is only in the eighties. I need my new fixture to come in and I need to put up a temporary background to hold the heat in.

Yeah, you have to get those temps up to 100 -105 atleast, or they will not eat or digest well.

Won't be very active either.

I know, I know. I have some work to do to get everything worked out. I've never had a tank that I needed to keep so warm before.
