Obtaining drymobius margaritiferus (jeweled racer)...

nekomi Oct 11, 2004 09:54 PM

Anyone know where I could obtain a WC or CB specimen? They're beautiful but seem extremely difficult to obtain.

I'll be attending the All-Ohio shows regularly from now on, so maybe I'll strike out and someone will happen to bring one along.

Any tips are appreciated! Thanks!

Marks a good source, all of my adults have come from him, and have been good eater/breeders.

Hi, I just saw a photo of this species for the first time yesterday. (From Mark Lucas who yesterday had them in the other snakes section of the classifieds)
This seems like a good posting to add to, so I have a few beginners questions about them. How long do they grow, and what's their preferred food in the wild? Any unusual requirements they have? Can they be safely and comfortably housed together? From what I gather, racers are high strung, sometimes agressive but pretty darn smart for snakes. Do jeweled racers vary from this?
I know there are about five subspecies, which one is it that has the stunning red flecks on their scales?
Lastly (and maybe I should have asked this first) but can you recommend any good references or resources to learn more about them from?
Thanks for your patience. Give me five/ten more years and I'll be answering posts like this one!

Drymobius margaretiferus margaretiferus is highly variable having serval different color morphs at least three that I know of. The most popular is the "blue" which has bright turquoise blue on the head, neck and tail, the rest of the body consisting of black edged yellow to red scales. This color phase is also the genetically dominant one. The second is the "green" which is generally a solid green, some brighter green at the head and tail. The green can sometimes be bluish in color. The last is the "yellow" which has yellow scales edged in black with no blue or green. Usually they are all sold together so you have to be specific when ordering. So far, I have bred greens and blues together, all of the babies have been blues.
