Bigger RES, shedding prob

CelinaCorinne Oct 11, 2004 11:38 PM

My RES cmae from a pet shop with shell rot, it was quite bad and after much care and a vet visit she got better, but her shell has stayed very pitted, and a real muddy color ( no clear yellowy designs) anyway. That was about 3 years ago and she has had no definate shedding since, she is now starting to shed really thick scutes, possibly more than one layer at a time? and they are not coming off easy, algea is starting to grow underneath and I am having a hard time keeping her clean. Will her pitting and scars ever heal? And is her shedding in this way OK? BTW she is (idont know how old) but about 8 in. and I have had her for over 3 years, she was 4 in when I got her, otherwise she is healthy and active, suns alot on her rock, eats ALOT. Clear eyes etc. THANKS!!

by eats a lot... what exactly do you mean? because your turtle might be shedding because 1. the water temp might be too warm or 2. is that you could be over feeding 'her'. you are only supposed to feed your turtle the amount of protein that would fit in 'her' head, and only about every other day! the rest of the time she should be getting GREENS... lots and lots of greens... this may include anything from collard greens, to lettuce, to chunks of carrot. a varied diet is the best. and by the 'age' that your turtle is, she should be eating mostly greens with only a little bit of protein. eventually these sliders will become vegetarians, with only little protein on the side. other than that, i have no clue what could be wrong with your turtles shedding.
