Sorry messed up previous post! Repost!

Hi, I've always wanted a small reptile and I can finally get one. The only problem is I'm going to college at the end of the summer (which is why I can get one, parents can't say no lol) and have limited space/restrictions. I can have an aquarium up to 20 gals but I already have that stocked full of fish. I'm also taking 2 hermit crabs in a plastic kritter keeper. What I would like to know is are there any newts/salamanders I can keep in a small plastic kritter keeper? I want a frog but can't because of noise. I'll post a link to the kritter keeper I have in mind because as you can see by my previous post I can't do pictures. I would get the largest container in the picture (probably not the tall one unless I needed it). Piccy of container

An african dwarf frog would be good in that container. If you really want a frog. I think it would be too small for most newts and sals that are readily available at pet shops. But if you got a female dwarf frog, it will not call like the males do, thereby you would not hafta worry about noise. And they are easy to feed, will even eat freezedried fish foods. Just make sure you do't get an african clawed frog! While the dwarf ones barely exceed 2 inches, the clawed frog variety can get over 6 inches nose to butt! The people on the aquatic frog forum might be helpful to you and you can get caresheets through there. good luck!

This may not be what you want, but I'm going to approach this from the perspective of "going to college" rather than from the perspective of "what kind of newt/sal". Once you get to college, you are going to be surprised by the number of new opportunities for using your time! Also, by new opportunities to pursue interests you don't even know you have yet. I would advise not trying to take on new pets at this time. Another thing to consider is the trips back and forth to college - a newt has to be kept cool during transport. Does your residence at college have AC, and can it be kept cool inside in winter? If not, it could be too hot at times for a newt. Just some things to consider.

I am in my third year in college and i have to agree.. this is probably not the best time to get a pet..i have a total of 12 reptiles and amphibians and am moving back home to take care of them.. with that said...if you think that it is probably ok and if you are moving into a dorm or apt that allows pets.. i would get an african dwarf frog.. i have a female dwarf frog and she is real cute and easy to take care of..best of luck

Thank you all for the info, I was actually thinking about an african dwarf frog (they have a ton at Wal-mart by the bettas). In reply to the peopole saying I may want to wait; I was not thinking about getting a reptile right now. I was going to wait *at least* til christmas break, after I know what my dorm and room mate are like. The only pets going with me are a tank full of fish and 2 hermit crabs. I was just getting ideas for a reptile now so I can start doing research and building up supplies. I may get premission for a 10 gal aquarium (eventho the kritter keeper I showed was a 8 gal already) in which case I'll get one of those for my rep. Thanks all for the info.

You are saying you may want newts, but you also talk about reptiles. Which one is it? Newts are amphibians...
