I need some advise please

plainjane Oct 12, 2004 10:43 AM

sombody just gave me a uro.they said it is male I don't know howold but he lookes young.he is small about 6 inches long and very skiny.he hides alot and has not eaten much.his temps are about 110 in his basking spot and about 85 on the cool side.I give him crickets and greens(usually the same mix i fix for my beardies)with some bird seed mixed in.
How much should he eat? Will he get to be more sociable and not hide all the time? What else can I do for him?

For starts, you can raise the basking temp a little bit - 110 is ok, but 115 to 120 is better. The cool side is fine where it is.

For now, don't feed crickets until you can get him eating greens and such - he needs to be well hydrated before he eats bugs. You can also try giving him a 10 minute soak in very warm (not hot) water - only about 1/2 inch deep. He might drink if he's very dehydrated.

Do you know what species he is? Can you tell us more about the enclosure? How large is it? Is there a UVB light? What kind? Are there any tank mates?

If you just got him, it can be normal to be shy for a couple days or weeks, but if he's skinny and you just have a bad feeling about his health, you might consider getting him to a vet for a check up and a fecal exam - make sure he's not infected with parasites that are making him feel cruddy. He should have a check-up soon anyway, but sooner is better if you think he might be sick.

they said he was Nigirian. He is in I think its a 20L tank
I just now put in a hammock to put his basking spot closer to the heat and bring up the temp some.He seems to like it.theres a plastic house thing and a big rock with a stick leaning against it to climb on.he is in the tank by himself.after I put the hammock in he sat there a few minits then came down and ate almost a whole bowl of greens its the most he has eaten in the week hes been here.I've got a tan colorded shelf liner in the tank now but have sand to put in. I'm waiting for it to dry out.the store keeps the bags out side and it was wet.he is skiny he lookes like his skin is to big for him.also i put calcium on his salad every day and a vitamin supp. 2x week. I think that covers everything.

Yay that he ate!! That's very good news! Nigerians (Saharans or U. Geyri) are very suceptible to stress apparently. Hopefully he was just freaked out from the move. With luck and patience, he'll fill out. If he's eating and doing ok, you could probably put off a vet visit until you feel like he's well settled in.

It was very good of you to take him in. Is he red or yellow?
