starmom Jun 28, 2003 05:41 AM

just curious......
especially for the summer, since they are sleeping during the day and not eating and the house is like 80 degrees, could I put the u.t.h. on a timer?

what do you all do?
Thanks....

Well, my UTHs are on rheostats so when it gets really warm, I just shut them off...

What is the difference exactly between a thermostat and a rheostat? I bought a thermostat for my UTH, and my temp is much better now, but I have to play with it all the time because it seems to fluctuate.

Also, the thermostat has the sensor wire, so whats the best way to monitor the temp of the substrate on that end? It said it will take temp through the glass and you only need the wire for huge tanks, but it didnt seem to work that way. I know my air temp is pretty good, but its the surface that I worry about sometimes. Should I just take the proble and somehow stick it on the surface? I have cage carpet so its not like I could just stick it in the sand or something.

Other than that, my new girl is doing well. She's starting to eat out of the dish, and has started coming to my hand a little now.

your best bet is to put them on a thermostat so they keep a constant temp all the time if they have a proper heat gradient they will self regulate to keep their body temp.
