House gecko in planted terrarium question?

Malays Oct 12, 2004 02:18 PM

Hello. wanted to keep 3 or 4 house geckos in a heavily planted 30 gallon high tank but my concern is in time will the waste they make be to much for the plants?
If thats the case might just use a few plants in clay pots that can be removed to clean as needed.
I dont want to take the whole tank apart for cleaning so not sure if fully planted with soil terrarium is best option tho love the look. Any input would help.
thanks.

This can be done. I keep my day geckoes in planted vivariums. You will need a tall enclosure. The geckos are arboreal and will be less stressed and you will have a deep soil layer.
The geckos won't go to a bowl of water to drink. This means spraying the plants and glass once a day. Use distilled water so you don't get fogging on the glass from the mineral deposits. Also, buy a pressure spray bottle from Lowe's or Home Depot. You pump it up, then depress the trigger for spray. Beats continously pumping a trigger.
Use a 2 inch layer of gravel and a peat base potting soil for quick drainage. You don't want water sitting in the soil layer. Try not to place the vivarium near a window the change in temperature can kill the reptiles. Better to put a flourescent plant grow bulb over the vivarium.

Thanks, How long have you had the terrarium set up and what do you do just spot cleaning?
