Is this a male or female???

kellywood23 Oct 12, 2004 02:28 PM

Hi folks,

This 3-toed has a stub tail so I am having a hard time figuring out if it is a male or female.

It's eyes are red, but it's plastron is flat.

Any help would be wonderful.

Thank you!

Thank you Ed. I was leaning that way, but the stubbiness of the tail was throwing me off.

Can you get a picture of the head, and a picture of the hind feet? Sometimes the shape of both can help ID gender in box turtles. Three-toeds seem to be the hardest to determine.

I agree. A picture of the head and back claws will help a lot. From just the tail I can't tell, because the tail looks like it could be a male or female. Three-toed males don't always have a strong concave plastron so we can't even use that as a sign for this turtle.

I HAVE A WILD CAUGHT EASTERN BOX TURTLE. HOW DO I TELL IF ITS MALE OR FEMALE? I KNOW THEY SAY ONE HAS RED EYES AND ONE HAS MORE BROWN. BUT IF I DONT HAVE ONE TO COMPARE IT TWO, HOW CAN I TELL.ITS MY FIRST. IVE HAD SNAKES FOR 12 YRS, BUT THIS IS A NEW ONE. IF ALL GOES WELL, I WANT A PAIR OF SPUR THIGHED.

THANKS FOR YOUR TIME AND HELP
