Need help for a Corn Snake

johnlian Oct 12, 2004 02:52 PM

I fed my Corn 5 pinkies this Sunday and this morning I noticed. All the pinkies were in back in the cage with a real strong smell almost made me sick. I do not which way they came back out? they also were all together in a pile with a dark colored film over them. I never seen this before. So my question is this normal or could the snake be sick.

I do not feed the snake in his cage?
I always feed him 5 pinkies every Sunday.
I clean the whole cage out.

Hope I have gave enough info

Thanks
John

If they smelled that bad it was almost definitely a regurgitation. How big is the snake? If he is big enough for five pinkies, then he should probably be on fuzzys or hoppers by now. If he is not big enough for larger prey, then he probably should not be eating five pinkies.

Since you said that this is what you have been feeding and you have not had this problem before, you might want to check out the conditions in the tank. It is getting cooler this time of year, so it could be that the tank is too cool. Tell us a little more about your setup - number of hides, substrate, heat, humidity, amount of people and pet traffic around his tank, etc... and maybe someone will have some suggestions for you.

For right now, presuming it is a regurge, don't try feeding him again for at least a week. It will take his system some time to recover before he can try and digest something else. When you do feed him - try a smaller meal.

Good luck

About the tank. The tank is 55 gallon the temp is right around 80-77 during the day and around 70 at night. He has two hinding spots and half log and some rock he hides in and some fake bushes. As far as the people around, just me checking on him a couple times a day. No kids around or other pets.

As far as size he is approximately 30" long. and he has only been on 5 pinkies for about 4 feeding now.

To keep the tank warm, I use a heating lamp during the day for approximatelty 10 hours a day and a undertank heater.

thanks

Why not brake the feedings in half. You say you feed him on sunday, so how about 2 pinkies on sunday and 2 pinkies on thursday. If this isn't enough for him then you need to step up the size of the prey.
Good luck

I am going to go with the general concensus here. It sounds like too much food combined with the seasonal drop in temps not allowing for quick enough digestion.
Since this guy regurgitated be sure to wait at least a week to ten days before feeding it again. Give its body time to recuperate.
When you do feed it again only feed it two small pinkies. If it keeps these down maybe the following week you can give a fuzzie if you have any or can get any.

At 30 inches your corn should at least be eating small mice.I would follow the advice of the first post and feed one small-medium mouse a week.
