40 breeder vs 55 aquarium...

BOIDSNTEGUS Oct 12, 2004 03:18 PM

Which is better for keeping a pair of beardies (1.1 of course), a 40 breeder or a 55 gallon aquarium? The 40 breeder has more floor space and would be easier to control temps. The 55 has more height to allow for climbing and more length for thermoregulation. What do you guys think?

The 40 gal breeder is the minium for 1 beardie. The 55 gal is also minimum but not recommended because of less floor space.
Two beardies need at least a 75 gal aquarium, but larger would be better.

... I've housed a pair in a 4wx2.5dx2h with visual barriers, separate basking areas and escape routs for the female. The male I housed her with wasn't overly aggressive so they were ok together year-round (that's usually not the case).

If you're buying a pair, plan on a larger cage 4x2x2 minimum and a separate 40 breeder, 55 gal. or larger to house one of them when they're not breeding. Many males are very aggressive so the pair will need to be kept separate most of the time to avoid stressing or hurting the female.
